Patrick Heide Contemporary Art is delighted to present Undertow. A solo online presentation of works by Sam Lock (b. 1973, UK), comprises the artist’s abstract gestural canvases and works on paper.
Undertow evokes the unseen pull beneath the surface - an invisible force that drags, tugs, and shifts, mirroring the undercurrents that flow through Lock’s practice. It speaks to the dualities in his work: presence and absence, control and surrender, memory and erasure.
Sam Lock engages with these tensions through a physical process of making. Works are sanded, stained, scorched, and sealed; thus, each piece becomes an artefact of his method of breaking down and building up.
Lock explains: “… in the liminal spaces in between, finding and losing at the same time, being present and absent, being author and non-author, reasoning and imagining, constructing and deconstructing, finding solace in the shared mystery and anticipation of roads that lead nowhere and everywhere.”

Congratulations Sam!
