Sophie Bouvier Ausländer has been commissioned by Église Saint-François, Lausanne as part of ''L'Hospitalité artistique de Saint-François' to exhibit a unique installation on view from 27 June - 19 October 2025.
'L'Hospitalité artistique de Saint-François' was created in 2012, with its aim to provide with the church a space where Protestant theology and spirituality, on the one hand, and contemporary culture in all its forms (visual arts, music, dance, literature, etc.) on the other, can meet, engage in dialogue, question, and enrich one another. The Association conducts a creative project with one or more artists every two years.
For its seventh project, Sophie Bouvier Ausländer has been chosen to explore the theme of time, the commission is entitled 'Contretemps', which translated to English means 'Setbacks'. Composed of an installation entitled 'The time of the End', which is uniquely adapted to the church space and a tiny alcove created in the Billens chapel, where 'Call me Ischmael' is shown, 'Contretemps' immerses the visitor in a play of tensions with which they may resonate.
The luminescent installation surprises the visitor as soon as they enter the church. From the organ to the choir, the black rays composed of tongues of stretched plastic film seem to indicate a trajectory. Captivated, the visitor follows the presumed route. From wall to wall, from bounce to bounce, from oblique to oblique, the cloud suspended below the vaults seems to hesitate and doubt its own destination. Retracing his steps, the visitor finds, away from the monumental cloud, the Billens chapel to view 'Call me Ischmael', and urge him to stop....
